Ambassador of Indonesia to Syria: We always respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and seek to strengthen bilateral relations
On November 17, Indonesia’s Ambassador to Damascus Wajid Fawzi said that his country respected Syria’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity.
He said that the Indonesian Embassy did not stop working in Damascus and has always been represented at the highest diplomatic level.
“Syria was one of the first countries to recognize the Republic of Indonesia, which gained independence from the Dutch occupation shortly after the end of World War II and during this period celebrates the 74th anniversary of this independence,” Wajid said in an interview with the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
He said that his country participated in the Damascus International Fair and recently invited more than 20 Syrian businessmen to visit Indonesia. He expressed his hope that these activities will enhance the relations of the two countries to serve the interests of their people.
Fawzi said that there is work to double the volume of trade exchange between the two countries, which amounts to 41.6 million dollars.
He added that his country encourages Syrian businessmen to engage with Indonesian partners and increase business and economic cooperation.
Regarding cultural relations, Ambassador Fawzi drew attention to the participation of the Indonesian Embassy for the first time this year in the activities of the 31st session of the Book Fair.
He said that Indonesian experts of the Batik Art (an art of drawing on canvas and textile) were recently invited to Syriato participate in training workshops in Damascus and Hama. He said that an Indonesian folkdance band from Indonesia has performed in Sweida and Latakia and on November 18 will perform in Damascus.
The Republic of Indonesia includes 17,508 islands and has a population of about 266 million. Its national motto is ‘Unity in Diversity’. It is a founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
