Ambassador Khaddour: Syria has fulfilled its obligations towards the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

Vienna (ST): Ambassador Dr. Hassan Khaddour, Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Vienna, reiterated that Syria did not delay in fulfilling its legal obligations under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, despite all the difficult circumstances it went through as a result of aggressive policies and pressure on it.

During the session of the Board of Governors held by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna for the month of March 2022, Ambassador Khaddour said in a statement: “Syria has not been late in fulfilling its legal obligations under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and the Non-Proliferation Treaty and that it has responded to all requests on time, “noting that the path of confusion followed by well-known parties aims to put more pressure on Syria, which was able to fulfill all the international obligations required of it under the Safeguards Agreement despite all the difficult circumstances it went through as a result of the aggressive and failed policies of those parties.”

Ambassador Khaddour also welcomed the start of a dialogue between the parties concerned with ensuring the safety and security of nuclear facilities in Ukraine and looked forward to reaching constructive solutions that take into account the legitimate security concerns of the Russian Federation and to stop the flow of weapons and missiles to Ukraine.

He stressed that Russia is a responsible country and is aware of the importance of the security and safety of basic and sensitive facilities and infrastructure, including nuclear, and has since the beginning of the military operation submitted practical proposals and exercised the highest levels of restraint towards all attempts to escalate, stressing the importance of solving regional and international problems and supporting efforts to maintain security and stability in any spot of tension in the world.

In his statement before the Council, Ambassador Khaddour also welcomed the follow-up to the serious discussion between the Agency and the Islamic Republic of Iran, which constitutes a qualitative step to resolve outstanding issues, indicating that this step would not have been achieved without the real and sincere Iranian will to resolve it, stressing the importance of continuing joint cooperation between the Agency and Iran in accordance with the agreed procedures, including the full and effective implementation of the commitments of both parties, expressing his aspiration for the agency to continue to carry out the tasks entrusted with full impartiality, independence, objectivity and professionalism and not to fall victim to external pressures aimed at implementing political agendas targeting sovereign countries.

Ambassador Khaddour stressed the importance of solving regional and international problems through diplomacy and dialogue and supporting efforts to maintain security and stability in any spot of tension in the world.
