Ambassador Attiya: Syria calls for correcting the mistakes of the United States and its allies regarding the Chemical Weapons Convention
Hague (ST): Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Ambassador Milad Attiya, affirmed that the United States and some Western countries continue to politicize the work of the international organization, calling on all state parties to realize the danger of this policy in undermining the work of the Organization.
In Syria’s statement before the fifth special session of the Conference of the States Parties to review the work of the Chemical Weapons Convention, Ambassador Attiya said: Syria affirms that any attempt by the United States of America and its allies to turn this conference into a new platform to achieve political goals that serve its agendas is a violation of the provisions of the convention and an attempt to deviate this organization from its functions and the objectives for which it was established.
Attiya added, “My country’s delegation regrets that this technical organization has been involved again in geopolitical and security issues of a regional and international nature, and was diverted from the goals for which it was established, as the US and some Western countries turned it into a platform for making false accusations against Russia of using chemical weapons or preparing to use them as it has done with Syria for the past nine years.” In this context, Syria supports Russia’s right to defend itself and protect its national security in response to aggressive Western policies.
Ambassador Attiya affirmed that Syria’s position in support of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine was and will remain based on solid political, moral and legal considerations and principles, and this special Russian military operation has nothing to do with the work of our conference.
Attiya explained that Syria stresses that the main objective of the Review Conference, as stipulated in paragraph 22 of Article 8, is to conduct review studies of the functioning of the agreement, and thus achieve the subject and purpose of the agreement, address deficiencies or imbalances during the past five years.
Attiya added: In this context, Syria calls on the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the States Parties to shoulder their responsibilities to ensure the full, effective and non-discriminatory implementation of Article 11 of the Convention and to demand the US and its allies to stop violating and undermining the provisions of the Convention, and to lift those unilateral coercive measures against Syria.
Syria also calls for international cooperation to confront the illegal restrictions imposed by those countries on the transfer of scientific technology for peaceful purposes to developing countries, with the aim of preventing them from achieving economic and scientific development for their people, and preventing them from using chemistry for peaceful purposes in clear violation of the provisions of the Convention and the international law.
Ambassador Attiya stressed that the history of “Israel” is full of crimes against humanity and terrorism in all its forms and types, but the most dangerous of them is the use of all kinds of weapons of mass destruction against the Arab people, especially the Palestinians, since 1948 until now, and there are hundreds of documented and internationally known crimes.
