Ambassador Ala: The states that support terrorism do not have the legitimacy to make decisions on the human rights situation in Syria

Geneva, (ST)  – Syria affirmed that, “the British Draft Resolution” on human rights situation in Syria demonstrates again the insistence of the UK and other countries sponsoring this draft resolution to politicize the works of the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms . They act in a manner that contradicts the United Nations Charter and the principles of impartiality and objectivity that are supposed to characterize theHuman Rights Council’s work.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Hussam Al-Eddin Ala affirmed in a statement he made before the adoption of the British Draft Resolution that, the countries that sponsor and support terrorist groups and occupy parts of  Syrian territories and impose unilateral coercive measures on the Syrian people -measures that amount to crimes against humanity in light of the (Covid19) pandemic do not possess the moral and political legitimacy to take decisions about the situation in the Syrian Arab Republic.

This statement of the Ambassador Ala came  as a comment on the adoption by the Human Rights Council of a British draft resolution entitled “The situation of human rights in the Syrian Arab Republic” and the extension of the time of the so-called “International Investigation Commission” for an additional year.

Ambassador Ala explained that Britain, which is that main sponsor of the draft resolution, has been over the past ten years a major actor in fabricating allegations and promoting media and political campaigns against the Syrian government and the godfather of the so-called (International Investigation Commission). The International Investigation Commission’s decisions, reports and statements of its members confirm its role in deepening the crisis in Syria and perpetuating division and polarization within the council.

Ambassador Ala stressed that the allegations of concern to finding a political solution, putting an end to human suffering, respect for the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic and the unity and integrity of its territories are not consistent with the content of the British Draft Resolution that adopts the language of incitement against the institutions of the Syrian state and deliberately ignores the facts and the efforts made by the Syrian government to protect its citizens from terrorist groups.

Ambassador Ala renewed Syria’s rejection of this politicized decision based on the fabricated accusations that the sponsors of the draft resolution spent millions of dollars to finance and promote in the context of political and media disinformation campaigns directed against the Syrian government.
