ALGIERS– Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ramatane Lamamra called on all states to respect Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. He reiterated his country’s support for reaching a political solution to the crisis in the country.
In a press symposium with the Higher Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, Lamamra called on all parties to shoulder their responsibilities and provide appropriate environment to make a success the Syrian dialogue launched in Geneva under the sponsorship of the UN, SANA reported.
Commenting on the US aggression against Syria based on allegations of the Syrian army’s use of chemical weapons in Khan Sheikhoun, the minister called for resorting to the international law to prove facts regarding this issue.
He added that priority should be given to enhancing the international system to prohibit the use of chemical weapons rather than resorting to military means.
On her part, Mogherini said that the EU shares Algeria’s views on finding a settlement to crisis in Syria.
In the same context, Algerian Minister in Charge of Magharibi and African Affairs Abdul Qader al-Masahel said following his talks with Mogherini that the crisis in Syria can’t be solved except through political means based on inclusive dialogue, national reconciliation and fight against terrorism.
“Any military escalation would undermine the international community’s efforts to reach political settlement in Syria, ” Masahel added.
