Abu Dhabi (ST): The list of the Sharja International Award for the protection of cultural heritage in the Arab region included this year the restoration project of al-Saqtiyeh Market in Aleppo.
The Market was opened last October in cooperation between the Ministry of Culture, the Syrian Trust for Development, the Directorate of Museums and Antiquities, Agha Khan Network for Development and Aleppo City Council.
The restoration project has all the factors that qualify it to be nominated for the award, especially preserving the features of every historical epoch for all its buildings with more concentration on the buildings surrounding the Umayyad Mosque.
The restoration project also focused on documenting the decorative elements in the market and preserving the Syrian architectural heritage.
Al-Sharja International Award is given every two years for the distinguished projects that contribute to the protection of tangible cultural legacy in the Arab region.
