Ala: Syria supports calls for reforming the global financial system to make it more responsive to the needs of developing countries

Syria affirmed its support for calls for reforming the global financial system and making it more responsive to the needs and priorities of developing countries and more supportive of the efforts of the least developed countries in their pursuit of sustainable development goals, foremost of which is the eradication of poverty.

Ambassador Hossam El-Din Ala, head of the Syrian delegation to the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in Doha, said: “Syria hopes that the results of the conference will meet the expectations of the peoples of these countries and to strengthen the commitment of the international community to implement the agreed action programs.”

Ambassador Ala stressed that Syria has employed cadres and institutions to face the human suffering caused by the earthquake, for rescue work, removal of rubble, provision of care and shelter for those affected, and furthermore Syria has worked to facilitate the delivery of support and relief aid to all stricken areas. He pointed out that Syria values the solidarity and support it has received from countries and international organizations, especially from the least developed countries, which translated the slogans of international solidarity into real humanitarian action at a time when other countries refrained from providing support for political considerations.

Ala pointed out that the natural disasters that the countries of the world recently witnessed, such as floods, hurricanes and earthquakes, alerted the world to the importance of securing support for developing and least developed countries to enhance their resilience against these disasters and their effects on the population, indicating that developing countries are the most affected by the consequences of the Corona pandemic, inflation, economic stagnation and weak investments, while food security crises, high energy prices and climate challenges threaten to reverse the progress made in achieving the sustainable development goals.

Ambassador Ala added “Syria stresses the importance the developed countries implement their commitments at the Paris conference to help these countries adapt to the phenomenon of climate change, and calls for supporting the Loss and Damage Fund that was established last year during the Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate”.

Syria supports the multilateral approach to assist developing countries away from politicization

Ala also affirmed Syria’s firm support for the multilateral approach aimed at assisting developing countries, especially the least developed ones, in achieving sustainable development goals, away from politicization while respecting the specifics of countries and their national, cultural and historical values.

He expressed Syria’s appreciation for the international calls to lift the unilateral coercive measures imposed on it that impede the humanitarian response and the delivery of relief aid to those affected by the earthquake.

Ambassador Ala stated that the earthquake that struck Syria on the sixth of last February caused thousands of victims and injured, and caused the cracking and collapse of thousands of homes and public and private property, and caused severe damage to the infrastructure and service facilities.

He stressed that the achievement of the goals of the work program adopted in the first part of the conference will depend largely on the real commitment to implementing the partnerships and innovative solutions envisaged by all concerned parties. Achieving the goals will also depend on the active support of the international community through facilitating technology transfer, promoting investments and direct foreign exchange as well as the developed countries’ implementing of their pledges to provide official development assistance in order to help the least developed countries expand their development opportunities and get out of this category by building more developed and prosperous economies.
