VATICAN, (ST)- Delegated by President Bashar Al-Assad, Syria’s Ambassador to the Vatican Hussam Eddin Ala on Saturday took part in a solemn ceremony, presided over by Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, to elevate 17 new cardinals.
During the ceremony, the Papal Ambassador in Syria Archbishop Mario Zenari will be named cardinal.
Ala conveyed President Bashar Al-Assad’s greetings and feelings of respect and appreciation to Pope Francis over his interest in Syria; interest that was expressed on different occasions the latest of which his unprecedented decision to elevate archbishop Zenari to cardinal, stressing that this decision carries deep meaning.
On his part, the Pope affirmed his concern in attaining peace in Syria, clarifying that he wanted to specialize Syria with this gesture to express his closeness to and sympathy with Syria and the Syrian people.
On November 15, the Catholic News Agency reported that Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said that Pope Francis’ decision to give a red hat to the longtime papal envoy to Syria is a sign of the Pope’s closeness to the Church and people on the ground amid the country’s dire situation.
“With this decision, the Pope wanted to express a great sign of closeness to Syria,” Cardinal Parolin told CNA Nov. 13. The gesture goes beyond mere “diplomatic formulas,” and is a sign of human and ecclesial closeness, according to the agency.
