Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Al-Shaibani held a meeting today in Damascus with a delegation of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM), headed by Robert Bennett.
The two sides held constructive talks that dealt with ways to expand cooperation and joint work with the best possible mechanisms, in order to achieve for the Syrian people comprehensive and just accountability for what was committed by the former regime.
The two parties emphasized that transitional justice represents a comprehensive process that affects various aspects of life, including providing basic services, ensuring a safe and decent return to refugees, and responding to the needs of the Syrian people.
They stressed that justice cannot be selective or isolated from the general context.
Minister Al -Shaibani stressed that the unilateral coersive measures and sanctions imposed on Syria directly hinder the path of transitional justice, institutional reform efforts, and the rehabilitation of vital sectors, which all are one of the basic pillars of achieving peace and justice.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs affirmed the commitment of the Syrian Arab Republic to continuous cooperation with the IIIM in the context of seeking to achieve accountability and reach fair results that achieve justice to the victims and their families.
