The government has placed the main Al-Qaeda faction in Syria on Canada’s official list of outlawed terrorist organizations, blaming it for attacks that have killed “scores” of civilians.
The designation of Jabhat Al-Nusra comes as dozens of Canadians are said to be fighting in Syria, some with extremist factions. The listing makes it easier for police to investigate the group’s links to Canada.
Jabhat Al-Nusra has claimed responsibility for nearly 600 terrorist attacks, including kidnappings, assassinations, car bombings and suicide bombings, according to Public Safety Canada.
The attacks have taken place in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs and other major population centres. Jabhat Al-Nusra is one of hundreds of armed groups fighting to topple Syrian government.
