Al-Moallem: Syria Doesn’t Need Foreign Ground Forces to Enter the Country to Fight “Daesh”

DAMASCUS, (ST)-Deputy Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem has stressed that Syria’s top priority focuses on fighting terrorism and attaining national reconciliation as to reach political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Al-Moallem, who was speaking during a joint press conference in Damascus on Monday along with his Belarusian counterpart Vladimir MacKay, asserted that Syria has responded positively with every initiative based on drying terrorism sources and holding inter-Syrian dialogue.

The press conference was held following talks between al-Moallem and Mackay.

Al-Moallem described the talks as constructive and pointed out that the timing of Mackay’s visit to Syria affirms Belarus’s support for the Syrian stances under the leadership of President Bashar Al-Assad.

On “Daesh” terrorist organization’s crime of burning alive the captured Jordanian pilot, al-Moallem said Syria condemned the crime of killing the Jordanian pilot Mouaz Kasasbeh and consoled the families of the victim.

“Syria urged the Jordanian government to coordinate with Syria on fighting terrorism though Syria knew beforehand that Jordan doesn’t have an independent will to make such a decision because it is part of the US-led alliance,” al-Moallem added.  

He stressed that “Jordan is part in the process of sending terrorists to Syria across its borders after training them within camps inside the Jordanian territories and under the supervision of the United States.”

“Jordan Fights Daesh for its own reasons, but doesn’t fight al-Nousra Front terrorists who are spreading along its borders,” al-Moallem said.

“We won’t allow anyone to violate our national sovereignty and we don’t need foreign ground forces to enter Syria to fight Daesh…The Syrian Arab Army can do this mission with great courage,” he added. 

The Syrian top diplomat thanked the Russian friends for holding the Moscow Consultative Meeting, stressing that the West has failed to do what the Russians have done and that the Syrian-Russian efforts will continue to be exerted as to witness a Syrian-Syrian dialogue in Damascus.  

Regarding Stephan de Mistura’s initiative to freeze fighting in Aleppo, al-Moallem said “the initiative focused on the city of Aleppo only without mentioning the Aleppo countryside. We welcomed the initiative starting from our keenness on reaching an agreement that maintains Aleppo unity, stability and normal life.”

He added that through cooperating with international humanitarian organizations “we aim to stress the need not to politicize the humanitarian aid and to ensure the access of humanitarian assistance to all affected areas.”

On his part, the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Mackay reiterated his country’s support for Syria and urged the international community to work hard as to fight terrorism and attain a peaceful solution to the crisis in the country.

He said “Belarus is confident that Syria can emerge from the ongoing crisis stronger than before, and pointed out that he is optimistic about the wide prospects of cooperation between the two countries.

Mackay said Belarus is against any form of foreign interference in the internal affairs of any country, noting that “it is unacceptable to differentiate between a good terrorist and a bad one.”

He stressed that the Syrian government is a leading country in fighting all forms of terrorism.

The Belarusian foreign minister expressed his country’s readiness to provide assistance in the areas of developing the Syrian economic abilities, stressing that the agreements signed today between the two countries will expand multi-sided cooperation including the increase of trade exchange.
