Al-Moallem-Lavrov Talks to Focus on Military, Political, Humanitarian Situation in Syria

MOSCOW, (ST)- Talks on Saturday between Syria’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem and the Russian Foreign Minister Segey Lavrov will focus on the military, political and humanitarian situation in Syria, including developments in Aleppo, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry said that the talks will deal with “the efforts of the Syrian and Russian armies who continue fighting “Deash” and “Jabhat Al-Nusra”, in addition to the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians, primarily food, medicines and first necessities.”

The ministry pointed out that al-Moallem will arrive in Russia on Friday on a working visit at the invitation of Lavrov.

“Syria is one of Russia’s leading partners in the Middle East and North Africa. Our people enjoy a long-standing friendship and mutual cooperation based on true respect for each others’ interests, according to the ministry.

“We value the level of trust-based dialogue and close interaction between Russia and Syria on current international and regional issues, as well as on the bilateral agenda, including settling crises,” said the ministry.

It added that in its approach to Syrian issues, Russia abides by the principles of sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, and its secular nature. We believe that political means are the only way to solve the crisis in that country and insist on the earliest resumption of intra-Syrian talks to bring peace and security back to Syria.

Al-Moallem visited Moscow in June and November of last year within the framework of coordination and consultations between Syria and Russia on anti terror efforts and political settlement.
