Al-Miqdad warns of inhuman repercussions of cutting the flow of water into Syria and Iraq

DAMASCUS, (ST)_Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Al-Miqdad received on Thursday the Iraqi Minister of Water Resources Mehdi Rashid Al-Hamdani and the accompanying delegation. 

 

The two sides reviewed bilateral relations, particularly cooperation in the field of water resources in the light of joint challenges being imposed on the two countries and the importance of enhancing coordination and consultation to achieve the interests of the Syrian and Iraqi peoples.

 

Al-Miqdad briefed the Iraqi delegation on the destruction caused by the Turkish regime- backed terrorist groups, mainly cutting water at Alouk station in Hasakah province and around it , and reducing the level of the Euphrates water flow into Syria and Iraq.

 

He referred to the Turkish occupation’s violation of all international agreements concerning this issue, particularly the bilateral agreements which oblige the Turkish side to preserve the levels of the water agreed upon. 

 

Al-Miqdad warned of the dangerous situation of the inhuman repercussions of cutting the flow of water into large areas in Syria and Iraq, and the impacts on health, environment, agriculture, drinking, sanitation, hygiene etc…

 

For his part  the Iraqi Minister affirmed his country’s  commitment to its stance in relation to supporting  Syria against the terrorist war being imposed on it, as well as Iraq’s support for the unity of the Arab nation, reiterating his country’s decisive adherence to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria.

 

Arab water security was also on the table, according to the Syrian News Agency (SANA), which reported that the two sides underlined the need to enhance Arab-Arab coordination.
