Al-Miqdad receives UNRWA Commissioner-General

DAMASCUS, Aug.31, (ST)- Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in the caretaker government, Faisal Al-Miqdad, met with Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and his accompanying delegation.

Al-Miqdad affirmed Syria’s principled position towards the Palestinian issue and its permanent commitment to supporting the Palestinian people, including the return of Palestinian refugees, at a time when the Zionist occupation entity and its supporters, led by the United States of America, are seeking to liquidate the Palestinian issue and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

The Minister also indicated that the Syrian government provides all facilities to UNRWA to carry out its  tasks to ensure the continuation of a decent life for Palestinian refugees in Syria, expressing his appreciation for the agency’s efforts in Syria and the joint cooperation and coordination with the General Authority for Palestine Refugees.

He stressed Syria’s condemnation of the attempts of the occupying entity and the United States that aim at ending the mandate of UNRWA through  falsely accusing it of being a terrorist organization and thus stopping the important services it provides to the Palestinian people.

For his part, Lazzarini expressed his gratitude for the efforts made by the Syrian government to facilitate and support the agency’s work in Syria, stressing the need to mobilize the necessary support to confront the various challenges facing the agency, including providing the necessary funding for it to fulfill its mandate.
