Al-Miqdad discusses with Grandi the programs implemented by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Syria

Dr. Faisal Al-Miqdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, discussed with Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and his accompanying delegation the programs implemented by the UNHCR in Syria and ways of cooperation and coordination between UNHCR and the Syrian government to develop and strengthen these programs, especially in the field of early recovery, electricity and water, as stipulated in the Security Council resolution No. 2642.

Minister Al-Miqdad stressed the importance that Syria attaches to cooperation with UNHCR and to facilitate its work in coordination with national authorities and in accordance with the real needs of the Syrians without any politicization by Western countries.

Al-Miqdad pointed to the great satisfaction that Legislative Decree No. 7 of 2022 left among the Syrians, which grants amnesty to those involved in terrorist acts that did not lead to the death of a human being, as many Syrians inside and outside the country have benefited and are still benefiting from it, and the minister asked the Commission for more effort to support early recovery projects, including electricity and water projects, and rehabilitate schools, health centers, and infrastructure that were destroyed by terrorists, leading to the improvement of conditions throughout Syria.

In turn, Grandi presented the Commission’s activities and programs implemented in Syria, pointing to the positive impressions he got from his visits to some areas in Syria, where he witnessed the positive results achieved by the cooperation between the Commission and the Syrian government.

The Commissioner thanked the Syrian side for all the facilities provided by the Syrian government to the work of the Commission, especially in terms of coordination in the field of supporting the returning refugees, whether at the border crossings or in their places of return.
