DAMASCUS, (ST)- The Syrian state has been exerting great efforts to eliminate the danger of the landmines left behind by terrorists in the areas liberated from terrorism by the Syrian Arab Army, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faysal al-Mikdad said during a meeting on Monday with Secretary General of the Norwegian People’s Aid (Norsk Folkehjelp) Henriette Westhrin and the accompanying delegation.
Al-Mikdad, who hailed the humanitarian assistance provided by Norwegian organizations in Syria, reviewed with the Norwegian guest the threat posed by the landmines left by terrorist organizations to the lives of the Syrians and to their daily activities, noting the increasing number of victims of landmines and explosive devices blasts.
The deputy minister said that marking the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, the Syrian state in cooperation with the United Nations carried out a campaign to increase public awareness about the danger of mines and about how to act when coming across strange objects.
He welcomed the Norwegian People’s Aid Movement’s willingness to take part in the demining efforts in Syria.
Westhrin, who expressed the movement’s readiness to contribute to demining activities in Syria, vowed to provide necessary expertise in this respect.
Norwegian People’s Aid is active in several countries facing landmine dangers and it helps governments of these countries implement national programs on mine clearance, according to Westhrin.
