Al-Mikdad to Senior Uruguayan Military Delegation: Syria’s Right to Restore Occupied Golan Unwavering

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faysal al-Mikdad has stressed Syria’s unwavering right to restore the occupied Syrian Golan to the June 4th 1967 line pursuant to the Security Council Resolution No. 242 and several other relevant UN resolutions which affirm that occupied Golan is part and parcel of  the Syrian Arab Republic and that Israel’s decision to impose its laws and administration on the Golan are null and void and of no legal effect.

Al-Mikdad made the remarks during his meeting on Wednesday with a senior military delegation from Uruguay, led by Major General Marcelo Montaner, Chief of Staff of the Uruguayan Army.

Montaner talked about preparations by the government of Uruguay to send a military unit to work within the frame of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF). He hailed the UN forces which facilitate the work of international forces in the Syrian Golan and appreciated the great support provided by the Syrian Arab Republic in this respect.

Al-Mikdad affirmed that Syria welcomes peacekeeping forces from the Uruguayan nationality, noting Syria’s firm stance on providing support for the disengagement forces to help them complete their mission properly and to expose Israel’s violations of the disengagement forces agreement by its repeated attacks on the Syrian territories and through its support for the terrorist organizations.

Al-Mikdad Meets UN Chief’s Deputy Special Envoy for Syria

Later, al-Mikdad held a meeting with Ambassador Ramzi Ramzi, UN Chief’s Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, within the framework of continuous consultation between the Syrian government and the special envoy’s office on the situation in Syria.

The meeting aimed at completing discussions that started during the UN Chief’s Special Envoy Geir Pedersen’s visit to Syria last month and at preparing for his next visit to the country, the date of which is to be fixed later.

The meeting focused on the situation on ground in Syria and the efforts being exerted to end the crisis in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions which stress the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and which relate to fighting terrorism.

The talks dealt also with the role that can be played by the UN Chief’s Special Envoy to facilitate dialogue among the Syrians so that the political process be owned and led by the Syrians.
