AL-Mikdad To SANA: Relations with Russia are well developed and deep-rooted in history
Foreign and Expatriate Minister Dr. Faisal Mekdad described the bilateral relations between Syria and Russia as “developed and rooted in history,” noting Russia’s principled positions supporting Syria in its war on terrorism and standing against aggressive Western and American attempts to dominate the region and the whole world.
“The meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow was very important for the development of relations between the two friendly countries,” Minister Mekdad said in an interview with SANA’s correspondent in Moscow, explaining that the situation in the region, the United Nations, the Palestinian arena and the results achieved by the recent Arab summit in Bahrain were discussed.
Minister Mekdad added: ”We conveyed the congratulations of President Bashar al-Assad and warm greetings to His Excellency President Vladimir Putin after he was elected president again and with unprecedented unanimity among the Russian people, and the achievements of the Russian army in the special military operation.
The minister pointed out that there is an upcoming meeting between the joint governmental committee between the two countries in Damascus and the signing of bilateral agreements, as well as there is a Syrian presence at events taking place in Moscow, Petersburg and other Russian regions.
In response to a question about some Western countries’ recognition of the State of Palestine, minister Mekdad said: “those countries should have recognized the Palestinian state decades ago, but what saddens us and makes us lean towards pessimism sometimes is that some of these countries are still stubborn and consider that the approach they are taking in their absolute support for Israel is an approach that leads to something,” pointing out that some Western countries are still pursuing their approach and hostility to all Arab countries without exception because they do not intend good for joint Arab action.
Minister Mekdad added:” We expect the Western countries to reconsider their policies and take the path that leads us all to a real achievement, including the establishment of an independent state of Palestine, the cessation of aggressive policies against our country Syria, stop supporting terrorism and criminal gangs in the region, as well as stop the limitless accusations towards many countries in the region. “
