Al-Mikdad, Shukry hold talks in Cairo on Syrian-Egyptian ties, regional and international developments
CAIRO- Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Al-Mikdad on Saturday arrived in Cairo on an official visit to Egypt at the invitation of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukry.
SANA correspondent in Cairo said that a closed-door meeting was held between the two ministers followed by an official round of talks in the presence of the delegations of the two countries. The talks dealt with ways of enhancing the Syrian-Egyptian relations as well as with developments in the region and the world.
Al-Mikdad stressed the deep-rooted relations between Syria and Egypt as a state and people.
He talked about the achievements of the Syrian people in the war against terrorism, and the difficulties they have been facing due to the Western sanctions that have targeted their livelihood.
He hailed the humanitarian assistance provided by Egypt to Syria in the aftermath of the earthquake that hit Syria in February.
Shoukry, for his part, stressed that his country has been keen over the past years to preserve Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability and to support the country in the face of the increasing challenges, especially after the difficult conditions it went through after the earthquake. He also stressed that Egypt has supported all the efforts that aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement of the crisis in Syria through inter– Syrian dialogue to put an end to the foreign interference, reiterating his country’s hope that Syria will emerge victorious from the crisis and restore its important role in the Arab and international arenas.
Concluding their talks, the two sides affirmed the need to continue with coordination and dialogue at all levels in the service of Arab causes, foremost of which is the Palestinian cause.
Al-Mikdad clarified that the Palestinian cause is facing liquidation attempts in the light of the constant repressive and criminal practices of the Zionist extremist government towards the Palestinians and the international community’s disregard for these practices and for the Palestinian people’s suffering.
Al-Mikdad and Shukry welcomed the Saudi-Iranian agreement to restore diplomatic relations, hoping that this deal will consolidate the region’s security and stability.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukry visited Syria on February 27th. During the visit, Shukry conveyed a message to President Al-Assad from his Egyptian counterpart Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi, stressing his country’s solidarity with Syria and pride in the historical relations between the two countries.
