Al-Mikdad reiterates the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty and not to interfere in its internal affairs
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Al-Mikdad has stressed the need that all countries should commit themselves to the international law and the UN Charter in their international relations, particularly through not interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and not imposing foreign agendas on the peoples of these countries.
Al-Mikdad made the remarks during his meeting on Saturday with the UN Chief’s special envoy for Syrian Geir Pedersen. The meeting focused on developments in the international arena and their impacts on the situation in the Middle East.
Al-Mikdad said that the past as well as the current experiences have proved the failure of the interference policy as it has disastrous impacts on countries.
Pedersen, on his part, briefed Al-Mikdad on the results of the recent meetings he held on the situation in Syria.
The Syrian top diplomat reaffirmed the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty and reject foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs, calling for putting an end to the American and Turkish occupation of Syrian territories and for halting their support for terrorism in the country.
Al-Mikdad talked about the Turkish inhuman behavior of repeatedly cutting off water supplies to more than a million citizens in the city of Hasakah and its vicinity, urging the United Nations to speak up against such violations and to adopt a decisive stance in accordance with the principles and goals of the UN Charter.
The minister focused on the impacts of the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States and western countries on the Syrian people, particularly in the health sector under the Corona pandemic. The two sides agreed that these measures worsen the country’s situation.
Pedersen pointed out that he always raises this issue during meetings with representatives of other countries.
Concerning the Syrian constitutional committee, the two sides asserted the need to guarantee non-interference in the work of the committee.
Al-Mikdad reiterated that since its formation, the committee has been working independently. It is the party that manages its activities and discusses the recommendations that may result from its meetings, based on the fact that the Syrian people has the exclusive right to determine the future of their country.
The minister explained to Pedersen, the developments that recently took place in Daraa province, stressing the Syrian State’s satisfaction over the solutions that were reached to restore normal life to the province.
He affirmed that the Syrian state has been keen on tackling the situation in Daraa through flexible dialogue and through avoiding battles that will harm innocent people and infrastructure. He pointed out that the state has succeeded in finding a solution despite attempts by some countries and parties supporting terrorism to impede peaceful settlement.
