Al-Mikdad receives credentials of Stephan Sakalian as the new head of the ICRC delegation in Syria

Today, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Al-Mikdad received the credentials of Stephan Sakalian as the new head of the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Syria.

During the meeting, Minister Al-Mikdad affirmed that the fruitful cooperation relationship between the Syrian Arab Republic and the International Committee of the Red Cross dates back to decades, pointing to the important role played by the Committee in the field of humanitarian work in cooperation with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.

Minister Al-Mikdad reviewed the status quo of the humanitarian and living situation in Syria, stressing the importance of working in cooperation with the Syrian government to deliver humanitarian aid to those who deserve it in all Syrian regions, referring in particular to the practices of the Turkish occupation and the hateful separatist groups in the north-east of Syria, and their intentionally cutting off the water of Al-Aluk station, for the suffer of more than a million Syrian citizens in Al-Hasakah. Minister Al-Miqdad called for swift and effective action by the international organizations to save the lives of these citizens.

The minister explained the inhumane impact of the economic sanctions imposed on the Syrian people by Western countries and the United States, with the aim of exerting political pressure on Syria to change its positions on regional issues. He also denounced the politicization of the humanitarian file by some countries and the attempt to direct humanitarian aid to the terrorist groups they support.

In turn, Sakalian expressed his aspiration to strengthen the partnership with the Syrian government to achieve progress in terms of humanitarian work in the country, and the importance of listening to the Syrian government’s point of view, which the committee will work on during the coming period and in coordination with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.
