Al-Mikdad participates in commemorating the foundation anniversary of Group of Friends in Defense of UN Charter
The Venezuelan Foreign Minister, whose country heads the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, held a celebration to commemorate the second anniversary of the establishment of this group, within the framework of the activities held on the sidelines of the meeting of foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement countries currently held in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.
The Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Al-Mikdad and the accompanying delegation took part in the ceremony.
During the event, the participants stressed the important role of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter, and the steps and initiatives that have been taken over the past two years.
The participants underlined the importance of continuing joint action, coordination and exchange of support in international forums, and pushing it forward in a way that preserves international multilateral action and endorses the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter away from hegemony, unipolarity, political pressures and current efforts to undermine the Charter.
The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations was established in New York in 2021. It expanded its activities to include coordinating the positions of its members in Geneva, Vienna and Brussels.
The group currently includes 20 countries: Syria, Russia, Iran, China, Venezuela, Cuba, Algeria, Palestine, Angola, Belarus, Bolivia, Cambodia, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Nicaragua, Mali, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Laos, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Zimbabwe.
