Al-Mikdad Calls for Pressuring Zionist Entity to Join All International Agreements Relating to Nonproliferation of WMD

 THE HAGUE, (ST)-Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal al-Mikdad has stressed the need to pressure Israel to join all international agreements relating to the nonproliferation of mass destruction weapons (WMD).

Al-Mikdad’s remarks came during his meeting yesterday with Angela Kane, the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs on the sideline of the Conference of the States Parties in Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) currently held in the Hague, Netherlands.

 The two officials discussed the positive developments relating to the Syrian chemical file, including Syria’s great efforts within the framework of implementing its obligations in accordance with the CWC and the decisions of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

On her part, Kane welcomed the notable progress achieved within a record time and hailed the Syrian government’s cooperation regarding the implementation of the CWC obligations.

Talks also focused on efforts aiming to hold a conference on establishing a WMD-free zone in the Middle East.

In this context, al-Mikdad affirmed the need to pressure Israel to join all the international agreements relating to the nonproliferation of mass destruction weapons.

The Syrian diplomat also met with the Finnish Foreign Minister Jaakko Laajava who is in charge of holding the conference on establishing a WMD-free zone in the Middle East. The two sides reviewed the results of unofficial consultations held recently within the frame work of preparations to hold the conference.

 The two meetings were attended by Bassam al-Sabbagh, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the OPCW.
