Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal al-Meqdad has underscored the importance of the World Health Organization’s adherence to real humanitarian work far away from all forms of politicization.
His remark came during today’s meeting with the new representative of the WHO to Syria Dr Akjemal Magtymova, who presented her credentials to him.
Al-Meqdad welcomed the new WHO’s representative, wishing her success in her task.
He emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation between the Syrian government and WHO, especially during the Coronavirus crisis.
Al-Meqdad briefed Dr. Magtymova on measures being adopted by the Syrian government to avoid the outbreak of the virus in the country.
He, in addition, condemned the unilateral and coercive sanctions being imposed by the US and its European allies on Syria.
“The US and its European allies ignore that these sanctions are immoral and inhumane and contradict the US charter,” the Syrian diplomat said, calling for lifting these sanctions in order to enable Syria to fight coronavirus.
He denounced the US measures against the WHO amid the outbreak of Covid-19 globally.
On her part, Dr. Magtymova expressed her readiness to cooperate with the Syrian government by all means to help the Syrian people to confront health challanges.
She stressed that she will prop up the Syrian government’s measures to fight the virus .
