DAMASCUS, (ST)- Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem has stressed that Syria will continue to support all efforts aiming to reach political solution to the crisis in the country, pointing out that Syria has dealt positively with all the results of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi and with the process of forming a committee to discuss Syria’s current constitution.
Al-Moallem made the remarks during his meeting with the UN Chief Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura and the accompanying delegation in Damascus on Wednesday. The meeting focused on efforts exerted to achieve progress in the political settlement process on Syria as well as ideas relating to the political process and the constitutional committee.
Al-Maollem reiterated that launching the work of the committee must take into consideration commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence and unity and to the Syrian people’s exclusive right to determine their future. He stressed that these are principles provided in the UN Charter, the international law and the Security Council resolutions on Syria.
“Based on these principles, any process should be led and owned by the Syrians, because the constitution and all relevant issues are a pure sovereign matter that only the Syrian people can decide away from any kind of foreign interference through which some parties and countries try to impose their will on the Syrians,” the Syrian top diplomat made it clear.
On his part, de Mistura talked about the meetings and activities he has recently held as to reactivate the political process and form the constitutional committee, pointing out that during his job as UN Chief Special Envoy for Syria he has done his best under very complicated circumstances to attain a political solution.
At the end of their meeting, the two sides agreed to continue contacts in order to discuss the ideas that can contribute to pushing the political process forward.
