Al-Maleki Reiterates Iraq’s Support for Dialogue-Based Political Solution to Crisis in Syria

Baghdad– Iraq supports all efforts exerted to attain a political solution to the crisis in Syria through dialogue, stressed Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

A statement issued by the Iraqi cabinet on Monday said that “during his meeting yesterday with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, al-Maliki urged the UN, the international community and key countries in the region to pressure all sides in Syria to sit to the negotiation table and try to find a solution to the crisis.”

According to the statement, Feltman stressed that he completely agrees with al- Maleki’s vision about the situation in Syria and affirmed that Iraq must take part in any international conference on Syria.

The statement said Feltman pointed out that he visited Iraq to be briefed on the Iraqi view regarding the ongoing events in the region, particularly in Syria and Egypt, affirming in this respect the UN’s “keenness” to make the Russian-American initiative to hold an international conference on Syria a success.
