Al-Lahham meets Larijani over war against terrorism

DAMASCUS,(ST)_Speaker of the People’s Assembly [Parliament] has said support offered by Syria’s fiends has been a major contributing factor in counterterrorism  and helping Syria to overcome its crisis.

Mohammad Jehad al-Lahham’s remark came during a joint news conference with his Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani, who arrived today morning in Damascus.

Al-Lahham stressed that Syria and Iran always evaluate situation in the region and exchange viewpoints about how to confront terrorist organizations, referring to the terror war being waged by western colonialist powers in collusion with some Arab states against Syria and Iraq.  

He underlined the importance of the deep-rooted Syrian-Iranian ties and resistance axis in fortifying the region’s peoples against the colonialist plots that seek to fragment states.

“The War on Syria aims at serving the Zionist entity [Israel], so we are not surprised by cooperation between the entity and terrorists. If an Israeli military aggression occurred, Syria would retaliate to defend its sovereignty,  unity and people,” the speaker affirmed.

He added that as long as the Syrian people is unified and the Syrian Arab army is fulfilling its duty under the wise leadership of President Bashar al-Assad, Syria will achieve victory because ‘it is right’ and it fights ‘unfair terrorism’.

Consultations over Russian initiative

On his part, the Iranian official underscored that his country spares no effort to support Syria to resolve the crisis and it has close contacts with Russia. “There are consultations over the Russian initiative to resolve the crisis in Syria,” he added.

“All Western and Arab countries are now working to offer a political solution to the crisis. I’m confident that many of them have realized that the political solution is the option. Nonetheless, some of them oppose that and act provocatively,” Larijani said.

On the other hand, he declared: “Syria has been a leading country in resisting Israel and it is paying the price for this resistance,”, stressing that “it’s our honor to serve the brotherly country of Syria.”

“Strategic mistake”

Larijani wondered why terror movement has emerged in every state the U.S. intervenes in its affairs, indicating that the U.S. intervened in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq’s affairs . “This question needs an answer.”

The Iranian Speaker described the U.S. “tactical approach” in addressing the issue of terrorism as a “strategic mistake,” citing that the US has now come to notice this problem “which they created and are today suffering from.”

The news conference was held after a meeting between al-Lahham and Larijani over continuity of coordination and cooperation between Syria and Iran in war against terrorism.

Later on, Larijani met Prime Minister Wael al-Halaqi, according to the official news agency (SANA).

The talks dealt with Syrian-Iranian cooperation and how to translate the signed deals into action.
