DAMASCUS- US threats won’t frighten Syria or force it to give up its war on terrorism, Speaker of the People’s Assembly (PA) Mohammad Jihad al-Lahham said on Saturday.
Al-Lahham, who was speaking during a meeting with Chairman of the Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security at the Iranian Parliament Alaeddin Boroujerdi, stressed that Syria is ready to confront any aggression and that it will emerge victorious thanks to the Syrian people’s unity, the sacrifices of the Syrian Arab Army and the support of Syria’s friends, particularly Iran, Russia and China.
“The US threats will be a reason for more cohesion and readiness to confront the aggression, pointing out that aggression on Syria targets the axis of resistance in the region of which Damascus is the main base,” al-Lahham said.
He added that the U.S. is garnering the support of its allies to launch a military strike on a UN member state in a blatant violation of the International Law and Charter. The US also finances and provides weapons to the armed terrorist takfiri groups including al-Qaeda-linked Jabhet al-Nusra, which have been blacklisted as a terrorist organization by the US itself.
Al-Lahham urged urgent action to prevent the aggression and apply the international legitimacy in order to attain international peace and security.
The PA speaker stressed that the United States, who accuses the Syrian government of using chemical weapon, knows well that the armed terrorist groups are the party who used the weapon and knows also from where such weapons came to kill the Syrian people.
He affirmed the importance of parliamentary and diplomatic action to attain a political solution to the crisis, hailing Iran’s efforts to support Syria and implement the international law.
For his part, Boroujerdi reiterated Iran’s full support to the Syrian people, army and government and its readiness to provide assistance necessary for the Syrians to withstand the global war.
In a statement to journalists following the meeting, Boroujerdi asserted that “war on Syria will have dangerous repercussions not only in Syria, but in the entire region.”
“Iran had submitted an official document to the United States informing it that the armed terrorist groups in Syria possess chemical weapons, but the US administration didn’t show any reaction to this.” Boroujerdi said, expressing his country’s condemnation of the use of chemical weapon by the terrorists against the peaceful Syrian people.
“We are visiting Syria to affirm our support to the axis of resistance and to reiterate our rejection of any aggression on Syria,” Boroujerdi said.
