Al-Jaafari: Western states have changed the UNSC into a tool to serve their political agenda and aggravate crisis in Syria

New York (ST): Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister and Syria’s permanent representative to the UN Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, said that some western states at Security Council have been working to hinder the work of the UN Security Council and change it into a tool to serve their political agenda, noting that these states have been working over the past ten years to aggravate the crisis in Syria, prolong it and impede the efforts exerted to settle it.

During a Security Council session via video on the situation in Syria , Al-Jaafari said Syria has long lived with the failure of Security council to deal with issues that cause threat to the international peace and security in our region and the worldespecially those related to the Israeli occupation of Arab land, stressing that some Western states worked to repeat catastrophic scenarios in Syria that were applied in other countries under deception titles and terms.

Al-Jaafari said that ten years after the crisis in Syria, western diplomats still repeat their groundless allegations and it is time to confess the grave mistakes committed by Western policies not only  against Syria but against our region as a whole, stressing that these mistakes are directly responsible for the bloodshed and frustration.  

The Syrian diplomat clarified that Syria was a founder member of the UN and was among the fifty states that signed the UN Charter in San Francisco and occupied a non-permanent memberseat at the UN Security Council four times, the last of which was in 2002/2003, and it realizes well the mechanisms of work in the Council, referring that Syria lived with the UN failures in dealing with many issues that threaten the international peace and security related to the Israeli occupation of Arab territories in Palestine, Syria and Lebanon, Balkan wars and dividing Yugoslavia, Rwanda atrocities, the Anglo-American invasion of Iraq and the NATO destruction of Libya.

Al-Jaafari affirmed that the Western states have always ignored the efforts exerted by Syria to resolve the crisis and found the so-called “Arab Spring” a pretext to destabilize Syria’s security and undermine its development achievements and weaken its national options through supporting terrorism , financing terrorist acts and launchingunilateral and tripartite aggressions against Syria apart from forming illegitimate coalitions beyond the UN that practiced occupation, killing, destruction, looting of oil and gas, artifacts and agricultural crops.

The deputy foreign minister went on to say that he read about 1000 statements and interventions  during his work for fourteen years, indicating that through his statements and interventions he has always been keen to clarify the violations of international law and UN charter and the attempts made to advocate the Jungle law. He noted that as the Council started to discuss the situation in Syria nine years ago, Syria demanded to uplift the principles of the international law and UN charter and respect Syria’s unity and territorial integrity, support the efforts exerted to resolve the crisis based on the inter-Syrian dialogue and support the Syrian state and its allies in this domain. However, some western states recruited their political, economic and media tools to cover their crimes and fabricate accusations against Syrian states.  

Al-Jaafari also clarified that all remember that statements of some countries at the Security Council always denied the existence  of cross-border terrorism in Syria, while many others went beyond and denied the existence of “Daesh” in Syria and called foreign terrorists as “moderate armed Syrian opposition,” and today after ten years of the intervention of the Security Council to discuss the situation in Syria, we find  a US  occupation of territories in  the country’s northeast side, and a  support for terrorist entities and separatist militias. We also find an American occupation of al-Tanf area and al-Rukban campnear the borders with Iraq and Jordan.

 He also referred to the presence of  the Turkish occupation in the north and western-north parts of Syria and to Erdogan regime’s support for terrorism and his recruitment of mercenaries and trafficking them at the international war markets. We also witness the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Erdogan and his mercenary terrorists with the aim of making demographic change and looting crops and depriving locals of drinking water. In this regard he referred to the suffering of a million Syrian people in Hasaka for the seventeenth time from Erdogan’s use of water by as a weapon of war and cutting the water off Allouk station for more than twenty days, causing grave humanitarian suffering there .Erdogan and his mercenaries also looted electricity equipment from Hasaka townsand transported them to stores affiliated to the Turkish regime to be sold later to Turkish merchants.

The Syrian diplomat said that the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan in southern Syria and  its systematic crimes  against our people continue , the most recent of which was the closing of a number of the main entrances to the villages of the occupied Syrian Golan  by the Israeli occupation forces and the attacks against  the Syrian citizens to prevent them from reaching their agricultural lands where the occupation authorities seek to seize them and set up wind turbine in the area, in addition to the repeated Israeli aggression on the Syrian lands, noting that these crimes are by the US administration which flees its commitment and the UN resolutions to change the demographic and geographic status of Golan as an occupied land that will return to Syria sooner or later. 

Al-Jaafari wondered what have the Western countries done  to allow the council meet its obligations and tasks to end the US ,Turkish and Israeli occupation  of parts of Syrian territory.“What have the western states done to allow the Council to assume an active role in the fight against terrorism represented by Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra, and the terrorist entities and groups affiliated to them? The answer is nothing.

Al-Jaafari referred that the Syrian national delegation to the Mini-Committee of Discussing the Constitution played a positive role in facilitating the 4th round meetings, stressing the Syrian ownership and leadership for the political process facilitated by the UN. 

Concluding his speech, al-Jaafari renewed Syria’s demand to the Western states to change their wrong policies and preserve the authority of the UN Security Council.  He  affirmed Syria’s keenness on the UN and the UNSC’s role in preserving international peace and security, but it at the same time regrets what has been made by some Western states to change them into a tool to serve their political agenda and another platform for NATO forum, reiterating that the only thing these states did was aggravating the crisis in Syria, complicating it, prolonging it and obstructing all efforts exerted to resolve it.
