Al-Jaafari: Terrorism sponsors sought to form six biased UN mechanisms to fabricate accusations against Syria
NEW YORK, (ST)- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Bashar Al-Jaafari has reaffirmed that the countries sponsoring terrorism in Syria have sought to form six UN mechanisms to fabricate accusations against Syria, pointing out that these mechanisms were not neutral, independent, honest or objective and all of them have failed when tested.
During a UN General Assembly meeting on the resolution, that includes the “United Nations Program Budget for 2020”, al-Jaafari said that the United Nations, represented by its main bodies and committees, has been subjected several times to difficult tests in terms of credibility and honesty, but it failed in these tests, because of the political and financial polarization practiced by the organization’s main financiers including the governments of the countries that create disputes and wars in all parts of the world and then come to the UN to impose on it certain work policies that aggravate crises and allow these governments to interfere in other countries’ affairs and impose suspicious agendas.
Since its foundation, the United Nations, hasn’t been a charitable organization, but a politicized institution per excellence that works in favor of the strongest party, but this grave situation is getting worse in a flagrant way- one that threatens its status and values and undermines international peace and security, al-Jaafari made it clear.
He stressed that despite the circumstances of the terrorist war, the deep-rooted Syrian national institutions and legal bodies have enough capacity and will to achieve justice, accountability and reconciliation and these institutions don’t need a Geneva-based alien entity that to collect what is called “evidence” without any respect for any international legal and procedural standards or any international or national criminal justice standards.
Al-Jaafari indicated that the political process in Syria is moving forward with the support of the United Nations through the mission of the UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria as facilitator of the process. However, he said, the process is still fragile and difficult due to the refusal of some well-known governments to deal with it as a Syrian process led by the Syrians themselves without foreign interference.
“This puts the United Nations and its Secretary-General in the face of a real challenge represented in maintaining neutrality and credibility in facilitating this process without yielding to the political and financial pressure and polarization practices adopted by the governments of some member states to promote the so-called International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM mechanism) in the regular budget of the United Nations, al-Jaafari said.
Al-Jaafari pointed out that the United States’ delegate revealed during the Fifth Committee meetings the true intentions of her country and those who back this mechanism when she said that the IIIM funding from the regular budget “will ensure accountability of the Syrian officials”. “This is a US recognition that they are the founders of the mechanism aiming at putting political pressure on and blackmailing Syria and that they support terrorism and will seek to cover up the crimes of terrorist groups in Syria, al-Jaafari said, stressing that the United States is a military occupation force in Syria, and it publicly declares that it will continue to loot Syria’s natural resources.
