Al-Jaafari: Political Solution Means Broad National Unity Government, New Constitution and New Parliamentary Elections
GENEVA, (ST)- It is not possible for any party to confiscate the process of the intra-Syrian dialogue in Geneva, Head of the Syrian Arab Republic’s Delegation to Geneva talks Bashar al-Jaafari stressed, pointing out that ‘those who abandon Geneva talks proved that they were politically immature and that they haven’t understand yet why they are here in Geneva.”
Al-Jaafari made the remarks during a press conference following the delegation’s meeting with the UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Ramzi Ezzuddin at the UN Headquarters in Geneva. He was commenting on the Saudi-backed opposition’s (Riyadh opposition) suspension of its participation in Geneva talks.
“Regardless all proposals and viewpoints, political solution in Syria means a broad national unity government, new constitution and new parliamentary elections…Any group considering things other than that are eluded and it seeks hindering Geneva dialogue and wasting the time,” al-Jaafari said.
He went on to say that “participants in the national unity government should be national opposition members with no foreign agenda and should renounce terrorism.”
On the delegation’s meeting with the UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Ramzi Ezzuddin, al-Jaafari said ” we discussed several issues and focused mainly on the amendments we made on de Mistura’s paper, particularly those relating to forming a broad national unity government and the need to pressure Syria’s neighboring countries as to implement the rules of the UN Security Council resolutions on fighting terrorism, especially Resolution No. 2253.”
Israel should be held accountable for violating UNSC Resolutions
He added that the delegation urged the UN deputy special envoy to adopt an immediate procedure at the UN and the Security Council level as to hold the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accountable for violating the Security Council’s resolutions relating to occupied Syrian Golan and take deterrent measures in this regard.
Al-Jaafri pointed out that envoy Ezzuddin asserted that the UN considers the Geneva talks as continuous despite the withdrawal of the “Riyadh opposition” from the talks.
“We held three official rounds of talks with the UN special envoy and his deputy and this confirms our seriousness and positive engagement in the dialogue process without preconditions or foreign interference,”” al-Jaafari added.
Al-Jaafari pointed out that in their official statements, some “Riyadh opposition” members, who are presumed to be in Geneva for talks on reaching a political settlement in Syria, gave orders to their terrorist agents and tools in Syria to break the cessation of hostilities agreement, attack the Syrian Arab Army and shell the Syrian cities.
