Al-Hamwi refutes the UN Inquiry Commission’s biased report on Syria

GENEVA,(ST)_Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva has lashed out at the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria as it deliberately exaggerates conclusions and neglects essential matters.

Faisal al-Hamwi underscored that the UN commission had purposely delayed releasing its report in order to give no time to the delegations to study it, hoping that such intentional act will not be repeated in the future. 

He was speaking before the UNSC session held Tuesday to debate the situation in Syria.

Al-Hamwi noted that that the commission used sectarian terms, basically rejected by all Syrian spectra, in its report despite Syria’s caution against using them.

He, in addition, said: “The commission’s recommendations did not mention that unjust unilateral sanctions imposed by some Arab and western countries on the Syrian people are behind the deterioration of economic and social situation.”

On the other hand, al-Hamwi made it clear that the commission accidently cited the Takfiri groups’ crimes and said nothing about abduction of Muslim and Christian clergymen and hiding them in Turkey.

“The commission turned blind eye to Qatar’s role in abducting UN peacekeepers in the Syrian Golan…it also mentioned nothing about  rockets fired by armed terrorist groups in al-Qusayr city (in Homs province) on Lebanon…it  neglected the terrorist groups’ role in recruiting children, rapping women, burning harvest, and destroying facilities,” he said.

“From now on, Syria will never trust the commission unless it releases credible reports in which it frankly talks about the destructive role of some countries, mainly Qatar and Turkey, in fueling violence in Syria.” 

Al-Hamwi stressed that the international community can help finding peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria through stopping its bias towards countries which support terrorism.

Russia: Commission failed to take ‘honest attitudes’

For his part, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UNHCR, Alexei Borodavkin, said: “The commission’s report failed to adopt ‘honest attitudes’…it doesn’t designate persistent explosions in Syrian cities as ‘terrorist acts’…it also said nothing about negative impact of unilateral economic sanctions imposed on Syria.”

However, he welcomed the report’s support for bring about peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria under the Geneva Communiqué.
