Al –Belass Natural Incubator for Bio-diversity

DAMASCUS (ST) – Albelaas Mount Reserve is one of the most important nature reserves in Syria,  which is famous for its natural richness of pastoral,  perennials and annuals plants in addition to the multiplicity and diversity of wild animals,  birds and the large number of valleys in which the reserve nestles.

Albelaas Reserve is a natural incubator that contributes to the maintenance of bio-diversity and wildlife in the region. It is 55 kilometers to the east of al -Salamiya city on an area of 35 thousand hectares. The Reserve is a part of a series of Palmyra Mountains, which is 708 meters above sea level.

The vegetation in Al–Belass Mount is characterized by its diversity through the presence of the most important natural perennial trees,  which was spread heavily in Al-Belaas,  wild figs and wild plums,  medicinal and aromatic plants such as  wormwood,  wild thyme,  mustard,  wild garlic and anemones.

A lot of wild animals spread in the reserve including the Syrian wolf and  hyena,  wild fox,  jackal and wild cat whereas the Syrian deer live in the form of herds in addition to certain types of wild birds as partridges, hoopoes,  larks,  doves,  wild pigeons,  birds of all kinds,  owls,  eagles,  rodents, rabbits,  rats,  mice,  reptiles,  snakes and  types of lizards.

Valleys spread in Al- Belass mountain that make up a group of water rivulets,  the most important are Abu Riyaf Valley and Alakira valley.
