Agriculture Minister, IFAD Chief stress need to secure funding for development projects in Syria

Rome, (ST) – The Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Muhammad Hassan Qatana stressed during his meeting with the head of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Alvaro Lario that the Fund needs to make great efforts and secure necessary funding for development projects in Syria.

During the meeting, Minister Qatana explained the devastating effects of terrorism and of the unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria, especially on the agricultural sector, in addition to the effects of the Corona pandemic, climate changes and global economic crises, the latest of which was the devastating earthquake that hit Syria and left a large number of victims.

During his meeting with Lario the day before the meetings of the 46th session of IFAD Board of Governors in Rome, Qatana presented a number of projects, that are consistent with the country’s current needs, for discussing the possibility of their implementation.

For his part, the Head of the Fund expressed solidarity and sympathy with Syria for what had befallen it as a result of the earthquake disaster.

He stressed the need to exert more efforts provide further assistance and study the submitted projects and securing necessary funding for them.
