The Executive Committee of the Sports Federation in Deir Ezzor held on Saturday the Euphrates Open Long Swimming Race, with the participation of 30 competitors.
The race was held in the Euphrates River for a distance of 500 meters. Muhammad Al-Manfi from the Police Club ranked first in the men’s category. Sherif Al-Nahar and Ahmed Al-Aboud from the Student Club won the second and third places, respectively. Ghaith Al-Farhan won first place in the junior category.
Head of the Executive Committee of the Sports Federation in Deir Ezzor, Hazem Battah, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the race was held after an 11-year hiatus as a result of the conditions that the governorate had passed through. The race is considered the beginning of the return to the routine of swimming, which is one of the ancient sports in Deir Ezzor – one that many heroes took part in many sports events representing the national teams. He pointed out that the race was held in the Euphrates River due to Al-Assad International Swimming Pool being out of service as a result of it being sabotaged by armed terrorist gangs, hoping that it will be reconstructed by the General Sports Federation as soon as possible.
