African Peace and Security Council rejects foreign interference in Libya

Addis Baba, (ST) – The African Union Peace and Security Council affirmed its rejection of all forms of external interference in the peace and security affairs of Libya and the African continent alike.

According to the Algerian News Agency, a statement issued by the council at the end of its session held under the chairmanship of Algeria today said that “the participants expressed their concern about the continuing crisis in Libya, which undermines efforts to combat the Corona virus and also exacerbates the already unstable social and economic situation in the country. The statement renewed condemnation of all forms of external interference in peace and security affairs in Africa and undermines national sovereignty and peace efforts.

In this context, the statement stressed the need to coordinate peace and security efforts on the African continent to ensure an end to the fighting in it, stressing the Council’s determination to use all necessary means to rid Africa of the scourge of terrorism and armed groups and their support networks.

The African Council called for an urgent ban on all sources of weapons, financing and their links to organized crime, drug trafficking and kidnapping for ransom, stressing the need to find sustainable solutions to lasting peace and stability on the continent.

The statement also condemned strongly the terrorist attacks on the African continent, particularly those that occurred recently in Chad, Nigeria, Somalia and northern Mozambique, indicating that they “negatively” affect the response efforts to counter the Corona virus.
