Sukhumi – President of Abkhazia Raul Khajimba said Syria’s recognition of his country’s independence is of great importance, describing it as a “bold and decisive step”.

“Syria‘s recognition of our country’s independence is of great consequence for Abkhazia. There is a lot of future work ahead of us and so it is important that the two countries prepare joint documents. I am certain that the Abkhaz and Syrian sides will do some quality work in this direction,” the Abkhaz president said during a ceremony in Abkhazia’s capital, Sukhumi.

Khajimba hoped that there will be a meeting with the Syrian leadership in the near future, SANA reported.

The Abkhaz president also hoped that Syria and Abkhazia will fare well in the matter of cooperation in multiple domains, pointing out the necessity of exerting efforts to bring the Abkhazians in Syria closer to their country of origin.

Last Tuesday, Syria, Abkhazia and South Ossetia have agreed to exchange recognition and set up Embassy-level diplomatic relations.
