Abkhaz Foreign Minister Says His Country’s Embassy in Damascus Will Hopefully Open in Early 2020

MOSCOW, (ST)- Abkhaz Minister of Foreign Affairs Daur Kove has announced that preparations are underway for the establishment of the Embassy of the Republic of Abkhazia in the Syrian Arab Republic, expressing hope that his country’s embassy in Damascus will open in early 2020.

Kove told Sputnik that Abkhazia and Syria will hold the meeting of the joint committee for cooperation before the end of 2019.

He said that last year during the Abkhaz President’s official visit to Damascus, Syria and Abkhazia signed an agreement on trade and economic cooperation and also an agreement on a document concerning the establishment of a Syrian-Abkhaz joint committee for economic, trade, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation.

The minister pointed out that the joint work program is very wide and “we are determined to implement it continuously.”

In May, 2018, an official source at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates announced that an agreement was reached between Syria and each of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on mutual recognition and on the establishment of diplomatic ties at the embassy level.
