MOSCOW, (ST)- Women in Syria are occupying advanced positions in all domains and they have key presence in all the state’s establishments and senior government posts, including vice President, parliament speaker, minister and MP, Speaker of the People’s Assembly (PA) Hadiya Abbas has underscored.
Abbas, who is visiting Moscow leading a parliamentary delegation, said during a round of talks on Monday with a delegation representing the Russian Women Union, that women in Syria enjoyed the great support of late President Hafez al-Assad and they continue to receive same support under the leadership of President Bashar Al-Assad, noting that the people’s Assembly has 31 women in its membership.
However, the situation of Syrian women within terrorist-held areas has deteriorated down to the ages of ignorance during which women used to be sold and bought as slaves, the PA Speaker went on to say, calling for unifying international efforts to fight the takfiri terrorism which threatens the entire world.
She also urged enhancing the Syrian-Russian ties, particularly in women issues in order to surpass the ordeals from which women in Syria are currently suffering in areas under terrorists control.
On her part, chairperson of the Women’s Union of Russia Ekaterina Lakhova talked in details about the history of the Soviet and Russian women and about the role they played in building the Russian family, society and state, pointing out that the Women’s Union of Russia is a member in three international women federations and including the World Women Democratic Union which has recently expressed its condemnation of the American aggression on Syria.
In a joint statement following the talks, the Syrian PA Speaker stressed the need to boost cooperation between Syrian and Russian women to confront the takfiri thinking targeting women. She expressed Syria’s gratitude for the Russian people’s support for the Syrians in their war on terrorism.
She said talks with representatives of the Russian Women Union focused on the great role being played by Syrian women within the current difficult circumstances caused by the terrorist war on Syria.
“Women in Syria have been fighting terrorism side by side with men soldiers of the Syrian army, they have had their sons, brothers and husbands martyred and they have proved their efficiency in all domains,” said Abbas.
Abbas is visiting Moscow at the invitation of Speaker of the Russian Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko to hold talks on boosting parliamentary, political and social relations.
