A UN committee welcomes international recognition of Palestine’s statehood

The United Nations General Assembly Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People welcomed the international recognition of the State of Palestine, calling for supporting and strengthening the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
“The expansion of recognitions comes following the United Nations General Assembly resolution issued on May 10, 2024, which reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and their independent Palestinian state” The committee said in a statement, according to Wafa Agency.
The statement pointed out that these developments also reflect the growing international voices demanding equality in rights and self-determination as stipulated in the United Nations Charter and ending the 57-year-old Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem (Al-Quds).
The Committee urged the Security Council to accept the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations. It also welcomed the interim measures issued by the International Court of Justice, which order Israel to immediately stop the invasion of the city of Rafah, allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza without obstacles, and ensure the access of any investigation committee to Gaza Under United Nations mandates.
In a related context, European Union foreign policy official Josep Borrell confirmed that the Union rejects the Israeli occupation’s attempts to classify the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) as a terrorist organization, stressing that it will remain an indispensable lifeline for the Palestinians.
Borrell reiterated the European Union’s support for UNRWA and that member states have resumed their financial support to the agency.
He said: “There are no longer words to describe the situation in Gaza. Day after day the processions of death continue. Not only are people losing their lives, but hope and the social fabric are being destroyed.”
