Within the framework of celebrating World Heritage Day, a traditional carnival procession was organized in “ Al-Barqiyyah” town in the countryside of Tartous governorate by the “Al-Barqiyyah” Association for Humanitarian Affairs under the supervision of the Directorate of Social Affairs and Labor in the governorate.
The carnival procession, in which about 99 heritage personalities representing the different spectrums of the governorates participated, roamed the main streets of the town in addition to representing some live scenes from the old customs that were held in weddings and celebrations to spread joy and happiness.
The head of “ Al-Barqiyyah” association’s board of directors, Ahmed Abbas, told SANA reporter that the carnival aimed to revive the intangible Syrian heritage by wearing traditional folk costumes that represented the various segments of Syrian society, indicating the carnival focused on children’s participation in the ancient Syrian feature to prove the deep-rooted Syrian civilizations and culture.
Regarding the idea of choosing carnivals in cultural festivals, Abbas said that the goal is to consolidate them in the minds of children so that the heritage remains firmly in their memories, adding the carnival was held in cooperation with the local community with the participation of different age groups of children and youth.
A number of participants said the main goal of the carnival is to highlight Syria’s heritage”, pointing out that Syria is one hand, one religion and one heart as it is the country of peace and brotherhood.
They stressed that their participation aims at presenting cultural diversity and enhancing the role of youth in preserving their heritage.
Other participants indicated that this carnival is distinguished by recalling ancient times by embodying traditional figures, calling for holding constantly such activities to introduce the Syrian heritage.
A number of the town’s residents indicated that for the second year in a row a carnival is being held and roams the streets spreading joy and pleasure in the hearts of adults and children, in addition to its contribution to the consolidation and revitalization of the intangible Syrian heritage.
