As an expression of their solidarity with the governorates affected by the earthquake and in condemnation of the unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria that impede the achievement necessary response to the needs of those affected, the Teachers Syndicate held a sit-in today in front of the United Nations headquarters in Damascus.
Participants in the sit-in carried national flags and banners calling for the lifting of the siege and the abolition of the so-called “Caesar Act”
The participants presented a statement to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Syria, in which they stated, “After twelve years of brutal global war and an unfair economic blockade on the Syrian people who endured injustice, siege and suffering to an extent that cannot be tolerated, we appeal to you to repeal the Caesar Act and completely lift the sanctions against Syria to secure medicine and food and to build what has been destroyed.”
In a statement, the Head of the Teachers Syndicate, Waheed Zaal, explained that the Syrian teachers are calling on the international community to lift the blockade, which has greatly affected the living conditions of the Syrian people in various fields.
Zaal pointed out that the unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria affected the education process and impeded the rehabilitation of schools and the securing of educational requirements.
A number of teachers pointed out that the devastation left by the earthquake requires concerted efforts to support those affected by it. Both teachers, Nisreen Muhanna and Dana Youssef, pointed out that Syria today needs more than ever to provide aid, relief equipment and medical teams to help it overcome its ordeal as a result of the earthquake that left human casualties and destroyed buildings and infrastructure.
In turn, the Director of Education in Damascus Suleiman Younis appealed to the international community to end the siege as soon as possible, pointing out that the American measures are unfair and they violate the international humanitarian law.
