A Ministry of Sports and Youth for the first time in Syria’s history

The President of the Republic Ahmed Al-Sharaa announced the establishment of a Ministry of Sports and Youth during the ceremony presenting the new government.

This step reflects his belief in the vital role of youth in nation-building, considering them the hope for the future.

Mohammed Sameh Hamed, the President of the General Sports Federation, has been appointed to lead the newly established ministry, making him the first Minister of Sports and Youth in Syria’s history.

In all previous government formations, there was no dedicated ministry for sports and youth, despite long-standing demands and persistent calls for its creation.

This move finally addresses the needs of one of the most vital segments of society after decades of advocacy.

The Minister of Sports and Youth affirmed during the inauguration ceremony of the new government that he will work to reform sports institutions and rehabilitate stadiums.

In his speech, Hamed promised to support school and university sports and ensure that physical education becomes an integral part of the academic curriculum.

He pointed out that “Sport is a means to strengthen national unity and moral values, and they will be an essential part of building the new Syrian state.”

Mohammed Sameh Hamed, 50 years old, is from the city of Kafr Takharim in rural Idlib. A former basketball player, he previously headed the Directorate of Youth and Sports in the ‘Salvation Government’ in Idlib in 2020.
