During a summit meeting between them, President Bashar al-Assad and Xi Jinping announced that Syria and China are moving towards a strategic relationship between the two countries in various fields.
President al-Assad considered his visit to China important for its timing and circumstances, as a multipolar world is being formed that will restore balance and stability to the world, while the Chinese president described this meeting as a pivotal event in the history of bilateral relations in the face of international situations full of factors of instability.
President al-Assad affirmed that China stands with the just causes of the people, based on the legal, humanitarian and moral principles that constitute the basis of Chinese policy in international forums and which are based on the independence of states, respect for the will of the people and the rejection of terrorism, which had a major role in alleviating the effects of the war on Syria, noting that Syria views China’s constructive role in the international arena and rejects all attempts to weaken this role. Syria rejects attempts to create tension in the South China Sea and establish regional alliances aimed at stabilizing the Southeast Asian region.
President al-Assad pointed out that China is a major, advanced and economically strong country, but it has not lost its humanity like other developed countries. Rather, it plays a major role in balancing the political arena and establishing a new path of development based on cooperation and win-win for all, and Syria will remain a loyal friend of China because what brings them together is the principles.
His Excellency added that China also has a clear vision towards Syria and our region in general. He also stressed that Syria supports all the initiatives put forward by Xi Jinping to ensure a safe future for humanity and adheres to the one-China principle.
President al-Assad considered that there is no difference between Syria, Ukraine, and the South China Sea, as the West uses these arenas to confuse countries, so we must confront the principle of military power with the principle of soft power based on ethics and cooperation approved by China.
President Xi Jinping said that over the course of sixty-seven years, Syrian-Chinese relations have remained steadfast in the face of changes in international situations, and the friendship remains historic and solid over time, asserting that his country is keen to strengthen cooperation with Syria within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, and supports Syria’s accession to the Shanghai Organization as a partner for dialogue. It also steadfastly supports Syrian efforts against external interference, rejects the stationing of illegal forces on Syrian territory, and urges countries to lift sanctions and the illegal economic blockade, in addition to its support for building Syrian capabilities in combating terrorism. President Xi Jinping thanked Syria for its support to China on issues related to Taiwan and Cheng Yang. He affirmed that the discussions with President al-Assad were fruitful and broad consensuses were reached.
The discussions witnessed the signing of agreements and memorandums of understanding between the Syrian and Chinese governments, signed on the Syrian side by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Faisal Al-Miqdad, and Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Dr. Muhammad Samer Al-Khalil, and on the Chinese side, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and Chairman of the National Development and Reform Authority, Mr. Cheng Shanji.
An economic and technical cooperation agreement, a memorandum of understanding on exchange and cooperation in the field of economic development, and a memorandum of understanding on the common context of the cooperation plan within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative were signed.
