New York (ST): China has called concerned states to immediately lift the unilateral coercive measures being imposed on Syria.
Ambassador Geng also asked the UN Office for Coordinating Humanitarian Affairs to evaluate the humanitarian impact of the unilateral sanctions, noting that those who claim that the unilateral sanctions do not affect Syria should join China and many other states in asking the UN Secretary General to submit a report in this concern.
The Chinese diplomat said that the suffering of the Syrian people is axiomatic as the years of economic blockade and illegal sanctions led to the aggravation of humanitarian and socio-economic situation in Syria and complicated means of decent living conditions causing immense suffering for innocent civilians, especially women and children.
Ambassador Geng went on to say that at this critical time, the unilateral sanctions undermined Syria’s ability to obtain food and basic health supplies and medical support required to confront the coronavirus pandemic, calling on the international community to take appropriate measures to help the Syrian government in confronting various challenges.
