South African diplomat: Syria plays a leading role in mobilizing the international community against racism
Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa in Damascus Mr. Barry Gilder has underscored that Syria plays a leading role in mobilizing the international community against racism and in rejecting the establishment of diplomatic relations with this system.
Speaking in a lecture he gave today at Rida Saed Hall in Damascus under the title “Nelson Mandela- The Heritage of International Solidarity”, the ambassador referred to the importance of international solidarity as the world is still seeking to impose its interests on others through putting economic and military pressures and exploiting the unjust mechanisms of world rule.
Mr. Gilder pointed out that Mandela had supported the Palestinian cause against the Israeli occupation when South Africa recognized the Palestinian state in 1995 and established diplomatic relations with it.
On his part, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Faisal Miqdad told reporters after the lecture that Nelson Mandela International Day reminds the world’s peoples of struggle against apartheid, citing that Syria was part and parcel of this struggle.
He, in addition, talked about the strong relations between Syria and South Africa and their coordination in international meetings, hoping that scientific, cultural and economic cooperation will continue with South Africa after the elimination of terrorism in Syria.
The Rector of Damascus University Dr. Maher Qabaqibi asserted that Nelson Mandela is an international symbol of the struggle for justice, equality, and dignity.
The United Nations General Assembly officially declared the day in November 2009, and the first UN Mandela Day was held on July 18, 2010.
