Russia renews support for political process in Syria without foreign interference

Moscow (ST): The Special Representative of the Russian President for the Middle East and African Affairs Mikhail Bogdanov reiterated that his country accords special importance to pressing ahead with the political process which is led by the Syrians themselves without any foreign interference as provided for by UN Security Council Resolution No. 2254.

Interviewed by the Egyptian al-Ahram newspaper, Bogdanov underlined the importance of the Astana track in resolving the crisis in Syria and launching and regulating the work of the constitutional committee, noting that Moscow rejects the hegemony attempts to impose others’ will on an independent state and interfere in its sovereign affairs.

He denied the allegations that claim the existence of differences between Damascus and Moscow, stressing that these allegations are groundless and they aim to distort the Syrian Russian relations.

The Russian diplomat added that these allegations go in parallel with the political and economic pressure on Syria, which Syria managed with the help of Russia, to foil all hegemony attempts, stressing that the Syrian-Russian relations are based on mutual respect and commitment to bilateral and international commitments.

Bogdanov concluded  that dealing with the strategic issues related to the economic cooperation between Russia and Syria is being done within the framework of the joint governmental committee, referring to the signature of several agreements between the two states during the past few years.
