China renewed its rejection of US interference in Hong Kong affairs, the most recent of which was Washington’s declaration of imposing visa restrictions for Chinese officials.
The official Xinhua news agency quoted a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Commissioner in Hong Kong said in a statement that “The Chinese people, including Hong Kong citizens, strongly support the protection of national security,” calling on the United States to immediately correct its mistakes.
He pointed out that Washington’s accusations of the central government in China of “undermining the autonomy” of Hong Kong are unfounded, stressing that “no one has the seriousness and insistence of the full and sincere application of the principle (one country, two systems) and the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and the well-being of its people more than the Chinese government.”
He pointed out that Hong Kong’s national security legislation is an essential step to reaffirm the commitment to the principle of “one country, two systems” and it’s an important step in eliminating chaos in Hong Kong and achieving peace and stability there.
On another topic, Beijing criticized Canada strongly for “irresponsible” statements about “two Canadians” arrested in China for their involvement in espionage.
In a statement posted by the Chinese embassy in Ottawa on its website, the embassy spokesman said, “Canadians have been arrested in his country since the end of 2018 on the basis of solid and sufficient evidence.”
The spokesman stressed that “China is a lawful country … and the Chinese judicial bodies handle cases in accordance with the law,” stressing that the indictment of these two Canadians was based on “clear facts and strong and sufficient evidence.”
