Washington (ST): Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has called for the removal of 11 statues depicting military and civilian officials dating back to the confederate period within the framework of the efforts being exerted to combat racism in the aftermath of the killing of the US citizen of African origin George Floyd by the US police.
France Press Agency quoted Pelosi as saying that the statues of those who called for brutality and savagery constitute an insult for the freedom and democracy ideals and they must be removed, because they promote hatred and not legacy.
Earlier, British activists have called for eliminating a list of statues from the British streets and state establishments because they honor racist figures. The list includes a number of well-known personalities including two former British prime ministers and two explorers.
