Lavrov and Guterres: Resolving the crisis in Syria through a political process led by the Syrians themselves

On June 2, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that finding a solution to the crisis in Syria is through a Syrian-led political process in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Lavrov and Guterres exchanged views during a phone call on the situation in Syria and stressed the need to ensure security and stability and preserve the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of the Syrian territories.

The statement added that Lavrov and Guterres discussed in detail the activation of humanitarian assistance for all Syrians without any discrimination, politicization or preconditions, especially in light of the special importance of applying the call of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to stop unilateral economic coercive sanctions on Syria that impede the supply of medicines and medical equipment. These sanctions caused a shortage of basic supplies and its impact on the situation in Syria.

On May 28, an official source in the Syrian  Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates  said  that the European Union’s decision to renew the coercive measures imposed on Syria reveals the falsehood of the positions and statements of its officials and exposes the hypocrisy that has become an essential feature of European policies.
